City Launches DOT Paratransit Services
The City of Alexandria introduced a new app that allows users of the City’s paratransit service, DOT, to book pre-scheduled rides using a mobile device. DOT is a specialized transportation service for city residents and visitors who cannot use transit due to disability.

Remembering Lee Hernly
It is with a heavy heart that we share Lee Hernly, Carlyle Council’s board Secretary, has passed away. Lee has served on the Carlyle Council since 2011. He was a member of the Grounds Committee where he shared his knowledge of being a Master Gardner with us to always keep Carlyle looking beautiful.
Alexandria Restaurant Week 2022
For 10 days and two weekends, dozens of restaurants in Alexandria, Virginia, will offer a $25, $35 or $45 in-person dinner for one during Alexandria Restaurant Week, August 19-28, 2022. This new pricing structure reflects a spectrum of Alexandria’s offerings from fast casual to fine dining.
"Hazel" Arrives in Alexandria
Hazel, a 380-ton, 14’ 8” tunnel boring machine, will play a key role in Alexandria’s largest infrastructure project to date. RiverRenew is a $665-million program to remediate longstanding combined sewer overflow issues and improve the quality of city waterways.
988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline
he 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline rolled out nationally on July 16, 2022. The new 988 phone line operates through the former National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, a network of 200 locally operated and funded crisis call centers. The geolocation service has not been implemented yet by the Federal Communications Commission, which means that cell phone callers in Northern Virginia may be routed -- based on their cell phone area code -- to a response center outside of their residential area.
Due to these pending geolocation capability services, and a 988 staffing shortage, the City of Alexandria and localities across Virginia -- where residents have a range of national area codes -- continue to promote their direct lines to local crisis support

Alexandria's 273rd Birthday Celebration
The City of Alexandria celebrates its 273rd birthday and the USA’s 246th birthday on Saturday, July 9, running from 6:00 - 9:45PM. The celebration will include a performance by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra and grand finale fireworks display at 9:30PM. Enjoy the return of the big birthday experience of years past with cupcakes, local vendors, live music, and an extended runtime.
Fireworks Use Illegal
While certain types of fireworks are allowed to be sold in neighboring Arlington and Fairfax counties, fireworks cannot be kept, sold or used in the City of Alexandria. That includes sparklers, novelty items or other fireworks.

Freedom House Museum Opens
he Freedom House Museum is what remains of a large complex dedicated to trafficking thousands of Black men, women, and children from 1828 - 1861. This Museum honors the lives and experiences of the enslaved and free Black people who lived in and were trafficked through Alexandria. SCYC Irish Luau Returns
It's back! After a two-year hiatus, the SCYC Irish Luau has returned! Come party in Old Town Alexandria, VA with the SCYC and kick off the summer with an Irish Luau! That's right, the SCYC and Alexandria Murphy's, along with supporters Guinness and Jameson, are combining the best of Hawaii and Ireland to kick off the summer! And, of course, they are doing it on a Sunday Funday! There will be drink specials, DJ, silent auction, a raffle, heavy hors d'oeuvres, and a ton of fun!
