VRE Station Improvements and Road Closures
The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) will be replacing two bridge spans over King Street and Commonwealth Avenue as part of the Alexandria Station and Bridge Improvements Project, with construction taking place over three weekends in May.
During these closures, King Street will be fully shut down between Russell Road and Daingerfield Road, with traffic detoured to Duke Street. Commonwealth Avenue will remain open but reduced to a single lane, with alternating traffic managed by flaggers.
The VRE stop will be suspended for the Carlyle Shuttles on the following days: May 4th, 15th, 18th, 29th, and June 1st.
Two different shuttles will run during this time:
A smaller shuttle will do the regular Carlyle route and turn around in the Kiss and Ride area to head back to Carlyle with the last stop at the King Street Metro Station.
A larger shuttle will complete the regular route in Carlyle and make a right onto Duke Street and left onto Danigerfield Road to make it to the King Street Metro Station.
Weekend Closure Schedule:
May 1-4: Begins Friday at 7PM; reopens by Monday at 10PM (track restored by Tuesday at 5AM)
May 15-18: Begins Friday at 7PM; reopens by Monday at 10PM (track restored by Tuesday at 5AM)
May 29-June 1: Begins Friday at 7PM; reopens by Monday at 10PM (track restored by Tuesday at 5AM)
Residents and visitors should plan for detours and allow extra travel time during these periods.
