COG and Metro boards Endorse Plan to Provide $460M to Modernize Metro and Transform Regional Transit
After 18 months of discussion and collaboration, the COG and Metro boards have jointly endorsed the DMVMoves Task Force recommendations. The plan calls on regional leaders to secure funding solutions that will modernize Metro and strengthen coordination across the region’s 14 transit operators, including Metro, MARC, VRE, and local bus systems.
A centerpiece of the proposal is $460 million in new annual capital funding for Metro beginning in FY 2028, enabling reinvestment in the bus and rail system to improve safety, reliability, and efficiency.
The recommendations also outline a long-term vision for a more integrated regional transit network, including:
Coordinated fare policies
Enhanced customer information
Faster, more reliable bus service through priority corridors
Following the endorsement, officials are now focused on advancing the plan and securing funding legislation from the DC Council, Maryland, and Virginia state legislatures.
